What is Math Modeling?
You may be wondering, what the heck is math modeling, right? Well, it’s kind of like using math to solve problems in the real world. Instead of just calculating meaningless numbers and solving equations for variables X and Y for a class, math modeling forces you outside of your comfort zone to apply numbers and models to figure out complex, practical, and real-life issues. It’s about taking all the abstract math concepts you’ve learned and putting them in a situation to find practical solutions that can make a difference in everyday life.
How Is Math Modeling Different From Traditional Mathematics?
Math Modeling is different from traditional math in a lot of ways. For one, math modeling utilizes approximations, analyzation, creating mathematical models, and applying them to real-world applications. Often in math modeling, different programming software programs are used in order to handle statistical computations and to create statistical models. In traditional mathematics, it is much more purely abstract, where most of the focal point of the subject is towards the relationships between variables and math itself. It is mainly focused on non-practical and unrealistic applications, whereas math modeling is quite the opposite.
What Is FDR’s Math Modeling Team
FDR’s Math Modeling Team is a team run by Mr. Hans. The Math Modeling Team at FDR is extremely unique and different from any other team/activity in FDR for a variety of reasons. Unlike other clubs/teams within FDR, this team will require constant dedication, effort, and extra commitment: that will often involve studying outside of school hours, during weekends, and during the summer. Furthermore, this team will compete in an international competition, the MathWorks Math Modeling (M3) Challenge.
What Is The MathWorks Math Modeling (M3) Challenge?
The MathWorks Math Modeling (M3) Challenge is an international competition in which students create statistical models, utilize programming, and write papers in order to answer a yearly prompt during a 14 hour competition window. The competition is extremely prestigious and such a competitive opportunity for high school students, due to top teams winning thousands of dollars in scholarship money each year.
How Can I Join The Math Modeling Team?
You can contact @mathmodeling_ on discord for any questions/inquiries, and you will be guided on the process.
