FDR: This Year In Sports
During the fall and spring semesters at FDR, several different types of sports are played. Many of our teams had successful seasons, made the playoffs, and even won championships. Some of the more successful teams that we have at the school include Boys/Girls Badminton, Boys Bowling, Football, Girls Tennis, Girls Volleyball, Girls Basketball, Boys/Girls Table Tennis, Wrestling, Baseball, Cricket, and Girls Flag Football. For each of these teams, there is a special player who took the team to the next level and created greater accomplishments for the team.
Boys Football had a record of 4-5 in the regular season, but they made it to the first round of the playoffs.Their star player, Tyjia Small, scored 6 total touchdowns and scored 40 points. During the season he had 81 carries for a total of 576 yards. He made the team truly special this year. This season was the first time the team made the playoffs since winning their last championship. The Boys Bowling team also achieved a successful season with their star player, Emanuel Casillas, who during the regular season bowled 24 times and totaled 4883 pins. In addition, he had a game high of 258. In the playoffs, Emanuel bowled 7 times with 1518 total pins and a game high 254. They made it far into the post season, and they are clearly to top team in Brooklyn. The Girls Basketball team made the playoffs, when many thought they wouldn’t. Their star player Sara Henriquez, who is a Guard/Forward, was a key factor in getting the team deep into the playoffs. During the season she averaged 14.40 points and 2.20 rebounds. The Girls Flag Football team had a successful season, and their MVP Kinga Kupras, had a great season. During the regular season she completed 73% of her throws for 388 yards, 11 TD’s and 79.73 QB rating. The Girls all did amazing and took FDR to its first Championship game. The Cricket team had an undefeated season of 9-0, and their MVP player, Saad Awan, had performances that made FDR the team to beat in Brooklyn. Saad during the season had 273 runs, a highest score of 97 and a batting average of 45. The Baseball had a great season this spring, but they lost three of their best players due to eligibility. One of the best players last season was Jermey Perez who had a .571 batting average and 714% on base average.
Several FDR teams shined this year, while some others need to improve. Lets hope the school as a whole can have an even better year in the 2018-2019 school year. Below are all the student/athletes honored at this year’s Sports Award Night!
