The supposed, “Music Biggest Night,” just aired on February 2nd, and to some perspective, the award show didn’t come with any vast “surprise” other than some minor exceptions. This article will provide a personal analysis of the reasons behind each choice from the Recording Academy.
Best New Artist – Chappell Roan
Album Of The Year – Cowboy Carter / Beyonce
Record Of The Year – Not Like Us / Kendrick Lamar
Song Of The Year – Not Like Us / Kendrick Lamar
Best Pop Vocal Album – Shorn n’ Sweet / Sabrina Carpenter
Best Pop Duo/Group Performance – Die With A Smile / Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars
Best Music Video – Not Like Us / Kendrick Lamar
Let’s start with the most nondispute winner of the night:
Best New Artist- Even though some might believe Sabrina Carpenter might have had a more commercially success album last year, the artistic identity that Chappell Roan continues to brand with her live performances, red carpet style, and fearless expression of her personal belief does make her an artist with more volume. Besides, this premium’s central focus is to predict an artist’s future value, as the Recording Academy awarded multiple singers less commercially successful than other nominees in the following year. For example, Christina Aguilar won against Britney Spears in 1999, and Victoria Monet won over Ice Spice at last year’s Grammy.
Best Pop Duo/Group Performance—The competition becomes meaningless when two Grammy favorites like Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars come together on a classic ballad track. This is especially true when Fortnight by Taylor Swift and Post Malone were not nominated due to the nomination of Levi’s Jean, which also featured Post Malone.
Now, let’s talk about the trend behind the General Field:
Best Music Video – Along With the two Grammy wins from Best Rap Song and Best Rap Performance, Kendrick Lamar has already won three Grammy awards. At first, I thought that the Grammy would be giving this award to Taylor Swift because this is actually her biggest competition at this year’s Grammy. Still, after Lamar takes home the award, I believe it would be a compromise for him that he won’t be winning in any General Field. Turns out I was wrong both ways. Kendrick took home Best Music Video, which only signified the popularity of “Not Like Us” in the voting committee, foreshadowing his winning of Record and Song of the Year.
Although I do believe that Billie Eilish is a Grammy favorite, the recording academy’s attitude toward her second and third studio albums is particularly strange, as both albums walked home with nothing out of their fourteenth nomination. Especially when Birds Of A Feather is still a standout track in Billie Eilish’s career, both critically and commercially. But the popularity of “Not Like Us” is unstoppable, as it seems to embark on a cultural reset of the West Coast Hip Hop landscape and from Lamar’s later appearance on the Super Bowl Halftime Show.
Best Country Album – At first, it was a bizarre win for Beyonce due to the reaction of the American Country Committee from the CMA. It also fits the Beyonce pattern of Lemonade and Renaissance for winning the best Album in their category and losing the Album of the Year. This is why I believe she had such a reaction after winning that reward. But it actually is a significant reason why she won Album of the Year, as she won Best Country Album. It means the country committee of the Recording Academy actually acknowledged her effort, which means all the country vote tickets will be on her during the poll for Album of the Year.
Album Of The Year – One sentence to sum up the Album of the Year award at this year’s Grammy: A very, very competitive year at the Grammy but also one of the most predictable years of Grammy. One primary reason for this broadcast is its lack of diversity in album choice; there are four pop albums out of the eight nominated for Album of the Year, two albums from male artists that are not critically or commercially special, one electro-dance record, and one country record (Although you can’t blame the Grammy on this for picking out this nomination because this is what the market wants). This caused a huge vote split in the pop category, which means the likelihood of a pop album winning is very low. compared to Beyonce, who was able to obtain most country votes, even some pop votes, and votes from another category due to her fame. This is also why Charli xcx could not win, due to the difference in popularity and the small number of votes in the Pop-Dance and electro-music categories. Therefore, the victory of Beyonce was definitely secured after Billie Ellish lost Best Pop Vocal Album to Sabrina Carpenter.
