The Bookworm Corner…

Hollow City by Ransom Riggs

An ongoing series, Miss Peregrine’s Peculiar Children portrays a modern-day boy named Jacob Portman, who meets the peculiar children, who have unnatural abilities and who are hidden from the present world, stuck in a time warp in the olden ages (1800’s-1900’s). Jacob ends up going through the time warp and arrives in Miss Peregrine’s area. He then meets new friends including, Emma, who is skilled with fire, and whom Jacob also has his intentions set on. He also meets Bronwyn, a uniquely strong girl; Millard, who is invisible; Olive, who is lighter than air; Horace, who gets visions; Enoch, who can connect with the dead; Hugh, who protects and directs the bees that live in his stomach; Claire, who has an extra mouth in the back of her head; and Fiona, who has a skill of making plants grow. Along with Jacob, these peculiar children fight hollows and wights, and end up in a dramatic finish that leads into the second novel.

In this second book, Riggs continues the journey, adding new characters that would surely make your hairs stand straight. For one thing, Jacob and Emma realize their affection for each other, despite their large age difference and the different worlds they come from. The children also find themselves constantly escaping the hollows or wights. They will continue their search for a cure to fix up their beloved headmistress, Miss Peregrine, before the spell cast on her becomes permanent. She would permanently become an animal if that would happen. The only cure was to find another ymbryne, who would be able to nurse her back to health. So, they slowly travel to London, where the heart of the Peculiars stands, hoping to find allies to stop the evil and greedy wights and hollows. In London, the children meet new people, who are also peculiar, and with their special characteristics, can they save Miss Peregrine by finding another ymbryne (almost like a headmistress) and decipher the plan of the evil masterminds?

In this second twisted and mysterious book, Riggs offers a true mysterious tale that leads us into the famous city, London. A story line that makes people wonder if this really happened in the written destination, and if they can see it for themselves.
