Gun Control In America
Gun control in the United States has always been a controversial topic. The many gun-related homicides, and the amount of people that own guns in the United States, is significantly higher than other countries. There have been 20,329 gun related deaths in the United States and 681 mass shooting incidents during 2021. These depressing statistics show the state of gun control in the US. When Congress tries to make stricter gun laws, they usually fail to get anything done. Many efforts to improve gun safety in the US have been made, but did not make it through Congress. For example, H.R 8 which expands background checks for firearm sales, or transfers online, in private parties, failed to pass. Congress also tried to pass a bill to close the, “Charleston loop,” a loophole that allows some gun sales to go through before a background check is done. It was an error that allowed Dylann Roof to get a gun to kill nine people, at a historical black church. Change is tried, but it never happens. The filibuster in Congress makes it impossible to change gun control in the US. Unless the filibuster is ended, or both parties can agree on change, things will remain stagnant.
About thirty-two percent of Americans say they personally own a gun. Gun control laws, in New York specifically, are the strongest in the country. New York had the second lowest death rates, among all states, which have rules against carrying a loaded gun outside without a permit. Some states have less strict laws which proportionally increases the amount of deaths related to guns. Gun laws depend on the state you live in, some states are safe- while some are not. In order to change this, something has to be on the national level, so that future suffering can be reduced and people will not have to be scared of guns in public.
