For “The Right”, Stuck between a rock and a hard place.
This summer brings Britain ever closer to their penultimate election. Come June 8th, the British general election will be complete and the fate of their nation will be decided. There are two sides who stand to win, the Conservative party lead by Theresa May and the labor party lead by Jeremy Corbyn. The grand issue here is that of Brexit, whereby the United Kingdom will leave the European Union. May and the rest of her party have promised a swift and effective Brexit, while Corbyn has contemplated abandoning the Brexit altogether. Recently both parties have released their manifestos, however, both of these documents leave a grim taste in the mouths of those who trust liberty.
Starting with the Conservatives, their policy is quite a compromise. Their policy on Brexit is what it should be, May had already been promising a swift and effective Brexit long beforehand and based on what she claims to be able to do she may give the EU little or no compensation. This can be important in determining the fate of the European Union since Britain is the second largest contributor to the EU budget, only beat by Germany. The EU is already deeply in deficit with Britain in it. This view on Brexit coincides with the views of the people since at the moment only 22% of their population is in favor of staying in the EU.
Unfortunately, their other significant policy is much more draconian. Their plans for the internet are a escalated repetition of the last several years, which is to say arbitrary censorship. If this goes to plan, they will mandate search engines and social media networks to intentionally divert from “hate speech, pornography, or other sources of harm.” This is compounded by the fact that even if it these “sources of harm” are seen They-they are obliged to remove them upon request, phasing through all bureaucracy. This makes the conservative vote a two-faced one, where the voters may have what they were promised but may be stripped of their rights in exchange. Unfortunately, with the way the Labor Party and their manifesto is going, there may not be a realistic choice to be made about this at all.
This is in no part due to any malicious act of either party, but rather due to the staggering incompetence of the Labor party. It is clear from their manifesto that they have no clear grasp of reality. For instance, in the manifesto, they announced that they plan on having a cabinet where at least 50% of which consist of women, maintaining the flow of refugees into Britain, increase spending on migrants and maintaining open borders with Europe even if they leave the EU, the latter two were the prime reasons Brexit won in the first place. The actions of Corbyn make it even clearer that Labor is unfit to rule. In fact, when asked on the orders to give Britain’s nuclear submarines in the event of a nuclear attack, he could not answer.
Before these manifestos were published, the Conservatives were projected to win in a massive landslide, but as it stands they have a mere five point lead. Thus we reach the present day, where the people stand at a crossroads, where one may lead to a deal with the devil, or the other which will lead to a schizophrenic nation, disconnected with the desires of the people. Whatever the outcome may be, we can only sit back and hope for the best.
